The first stop of the day was Chamonix in the French Alps
The Alps tower over the town.
But none higher than Mount Blanc.

Given that this was July, I reckon I can see why it was named "White Mountain".
The 5-hour ride from Chamonix to Venice began with a 7-mile-long Tunnel du Mont Blanc. A one-way toll was 43 euros -- almost $50! Hence, the traffic.
